What is Gabbrocol?

Gabbrocol is used to treat acute and chronic intestinal amebiasis (bowel infection caused by a parasite in your stomach or bowels). It is also used with other medicines to help lessen the symptoms of hepatic coma (a complication of liver disease).

Gabbrocol belongs to the class of medicines known as aminoglycoside antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, Gabbrocol will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

Gabbrocol is available only with your doctor's prescription.

Gabbrocol indications

Gabbrocol sulfate is indicated for intestinal amebiasis–acute and chronic (NOTE-It is not effective in extraintestinal amebiasis); management of hepatic coma–as adjunctive therapy.

To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of Gabbrocol Sulfate Capsules and other antibacterial drugs, Gabbrocol Sulfate Capsules should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.

How should I use Gabbrocol?

Use Gabbrocol as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Take Gabbrocol with food.

Take Gabbrocol on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it.

To clear up your infection completely, continue using Gabbrocol for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days. Do not miss any doses.

If you miss a dose of Gabbrocol, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Gabbrocol.

Uses of Gabbrocol in details

This medication is used to treat a certain parasite infection of the intestines (amebiasis). This medication is known as an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of parasites in the intestines. This medication is poorly absorbed into the blood so it will not work for infections outside of the intestines.

Gabbrocol may also be used along with a special diet to treat a certain serious brain problem (hepatic encephalopathy). This condition occurs in people with liver disease and is caused by too much of a certain natural substance (ammonia) in the body. Normally the liver gets rid of the ammonia. Gabbrocol helps to treat hepatic encephalopathy by stopping the growth of certain bacteria in your intestines that make ammonia.

This antibiotic treats only parasitic and bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

OTHER USES: This section contains uses of this drug that are not listed in the approved professional labeling for the drug but that may be prescribed by your health care professional. Use this drug for a condition that is listed in this section only if it has been so prescribed by your health care professional.

This drug may also be used to treat other intestinal infections (such as tapeworm infections, giardiasis).

How to use Gabbrocol

Take this medication by mouth with meals, usually 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor.

The dosage is based on your weight, medical condition, and response to treatment.

Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals.

Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a return of the infection.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
